Shops and Cafes

"Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... chocolate...." - Homer Simpson

Did you know that the average Australian consumes about 7.5 kilograms of chocolate a year. Chocolate also has many health benefits, among them is this wonderful chemical that relieves stress and tension. My husband loves chocolate and I enjoy it myself so when we travel he often checks to see if there is a chocolate shop in the area. So I thought I would share some of the shops and cafe we have visited. If you ever visit Tassie, just out of Devonport on the way to Launceston is D'Anvers. Where you can have a lovely meal with a hot chocolate and then browse through their shop of fudges and chocolates, my favourite - chocolate orange slices. In Geelong, when we have time we visited the Chocolate Room and Hahndorf's Fine Chocolates. My husband always finds time to visit Haigh's Chocolates, and recently we were treated to a Chocolate Afternoon Tea at the Windsor Hotel. I am sure we have visited many more and I'm sure there is more out there. Enjoy your chocolate.

I have also done many of the chocolaty things you mention. I have also been to Adelaide and caught a bus to the Haighs factory. They sell 1kg bags of chocolate there..something that hasn't come across to the shops in Melbourne!

Yum!!! I went on a chocolate tour of Melbourne a few years ago that visited lots of chocolatey places. Hot chocolate and marshmallows is perfect for these cold, rainy winter days too.

Only 7.5 kg - that doesn't seem anywhere near enough .....

nice try, it's more likely to be 23things more that I'll forget, between the feeding and nappy changes and such. I already have a 3 year old, it could be 23 things she demands of me...
Love the chocolate tour, bubs to be is not so keen on the chocolate, not like the 3 year old...mmmmm freddos....

Did you know that there is a Chocolate Room now in Watton Street, Werribee - just 5 minutes up the road? I tried a wicked Belgian Hot Chocolate one Friday night after work. You have to be quick as they close at 5.30 pm!

Next time I will try one of their spicy Chilli chocolates, yet then I may try a coffee flavoured chocolate, or an orange flavoured hot chocolate - so much to choose from.

By the Way, have you visited Glenelg Chocolates in Coleraine, on the Glenelg Highway on the way to Mount Gambier. This shop is just around the corner from my Mum's place and they make many of their chocolates on site. It is very delicious chocolate and sold exclusively in David Jones Stores and Darriwill Farm Stores. Their Contreau truffles are my favourite. Mmm Mmm Enjoy!

Thank you for all the comments. In our family 7.5kg seems pretty light. I am always looking for new chocolate places to visit or tell my husband about. My husband's family is from Hamilton so I know the Glenelg Chocolates shop in Coleraine that you are talking about. Our son, who can sniff chocolate like other children can find McDonalds was sick the day we were going to the Haigh's factory, so my husband went alone. The Cadbury factory in Hobart is also worth a visit.

That's awesome - do you go there regularly? It is a bit pricey but yummy! Be careful though, not everything they sell is made there or in their store in SA. I recently bought some Cherry Ripe squares that were made in Melbourne :( - I felt ripped then. I now carefully read the labels - I like you want the authentic thing!

The other thing I should mention that in 2001 we went to NZ and we were in Dunedin and walking around. The area resembled what City Road in South Melbourne looks like with old industrial buildings. As we were strolling around I said to my husband that "Ican smell chocolate". I said this repeatedly as he did not believe me and said that I had chocolate on the brain. As we walked around we ended up quite by accident outside the Cadbury factory in Dunedin! I felt vindicated as I could actually smell chocolate! Unfortunately the factory was closed for tours to the public. Doh!
